What you should check before you go to the drycleaners.

Read all care labels on clothes. If the garment is made of fabric that cannot be washed, they must be sent to the drycleaners.

If there are any stains, please mark them or make a mental note for when you come in. If you know what caused the stains, please tell let us know.

Empty all pockets.

If you find an open seam or a button missing, make the cleaners aware of it. More than likely we can replace the button or mend the seam.

Please keep your receipt.

When picking up your clothes, check the finish product. If you are not happy with the results or find any damage, inform the counter person asap.

Remove the plastic film cover from the clothes, air them in the shade for a while before putting them in the closet.

WHAT IS DRY CLEANING?

In spite of its name, drycleaning is not completely dry. The clothes get just as wet as a load of wash. The word Dry cleaning came about because the solvents used were not water based, hence the name dryclean. The chemical perc (perchlorethylene) is actually an organic solvent used to maintain and clean clothes in the drycleaning process.

Today 90% of all drycleaners use perc. It is completely non-flammable and non-combustible, of relatively low toxity, and can be efficiently used and recycled.

The drycleaning process begins with pretreatment of stains using special cleaning agents. The pretreatment helps loosen any soil that may be on the fabric so that the perc can be more effective.

During the dryclean process, the clothes are put into a steel basin that is perforated, just like your home washer, which allows the solvent in and then it forces the solvent out in a centrifugal effect, so that the solvent and the dirt it catches can be removed. The perc is then funneled through a filter so that it may be reused. Thus creating low costs for both the drycleaner and the customer!

Drycleaning is important for delicate fabrics that may not do well in washing. Some fabrics do not react well to both soap and water. Reading the care labels is vital in keeping your clothes like new.

Among the advantages of drycleaning is its ability to dissolve greases and soils in a way water cannot. The dryclean process helps your garments stay in a "like new" condition using precautions to prevent loss of color, shrinkage and fabric distortion.

CARE LABELS

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) requires that manufacturers attach a permanent care label to textile garments to provide directions for their care. Manufactureres must list at least one method of safe care for a garment. The FTC stipulates that the care label must be easily found and fasten to the garment securely, and will remain legible for the garment's useful life. The label must also warn about any part of the recommended care method that would harm other garments cleaned with it. It must also warn when there is no method for cleaning a garment without damaging it. Symbols may also appear on a care label to supplement written instructions.

If a label indicates dry cleaning, all components of the garment, including the outer shell, lining, buttons, inerfacing, fusing material, and trim should be colorfast and remain unaltered during cleaning. If any such problem occurs, it is the responsibility of the manufacturer. If the manufacturer's instructions are followed and the garment is damaged, the garment should be returned to the store. If the store will not resolve the problem, write to the manufacturer and send a copy of your complaint letter to the FTC. The information you provide the FTC may reveal a pattern or practice requiring the commission's attention.

Sometimes the damage done is caused by the dry cleaner. In this case, the damage garment will be settled with a claim form, prompltly and fairly. If there is some doubt about responsibility, the dry cleaner can send the garment to IFI's Garment Analysis Laboratory. The IFI can determine the precise cause of damage.

HOW CAN YOU HELP YOUR CLOTHES AND SAN TAN CLEANERS?

Keep perfumes, lotions, deodorants, antiperspirants, and other hygiene products away from your clothes. These products likely contain alcohol which will damage some dyes.

Protect garment, especially silk, from excessive perspiration, as this can cause dyes to discolor

Have matching pieces of an outfit or suit cleaned together so any color fading will be uniformed.

Protect your garments from prolonged exposure to direct light.

Don't press stained or soiled clothing, as the heat may set some stains.
